Haughty Melodic
I am torn on this album. This is my first full listen through the entire album, but I'm not sure if its any good. Mike Daughty's solo work was awesome and Soul Coughing was great, so I may be holding this album to too high of a standard, but some of these songs just piss me off. And I'm fairly certain I'd be very happy with them if I hadn't heard them when it was just Mr. Doughty and his acoustic guitar rocking out. But, I have heard how good they can be. And these songs? Ouch.
Especially "Sunken Eyed Girl". This song on the live recording was amazing. The pacing made you feel for the poor girl and her coffee. And made you pine for her, even. This version is too fast. There is no time for the words to sink in and really get you thinking of that girl. Which I think is a major failure. Doughty had it, he had an incredible song, and he totally bonered it.
In other news, I listened to DangerDoom: The Mouse and the Mask a ton the past two days. Its an album by Danger Mouse and MF Doom. Its loosely based on the Adult Swim series of shows. Its fucking specatacular. Click here for an actual review.
I got a room in virginia. It is quite comfortable. It is also very quiet. I dig.
And, no, I did not get tickets to the world series. I am also having serious doubts about paying 1000 for two. That seems to be a bit much for upper deck tickets. But who knows? I may get drunk tonight and wake up with a receipt for tickets and a rather full credit card.
Comments:
Regardless of the unabashed hate of pitchfork reviewing rap I'm glad to hear a good review of Dangerdoom, I almost picked it up the week it came out and will probably do so next time I'm feeling unloved.
Tangent:
I do 'get' pitchfork reviewing some rap, like Dangerdoom or Atmosphere, I don't really 'get' them reviewing Kanye West and other 'pop' rappers.
Frankly I don't really turn to Pitchfork for their opinions at all anyway.
